The Case of Devil's Rock

We're spending the first week of July 2025 going through the awesome evil archives of Scotland Yard's greatest horror hit maker, the ever brave Bentley, --and here's another hot lil number from the January 1943 issue of Pep Comics #35! And no, he isn't taking on 80's heavy metal, or the PMRC, but *gasp!* blazin' 'ol Beelzebub himself in his unholy, bloody birthday suit-- or is it!? Can you solve the mystery in time, or will you Barnes it up in utter failure, and die trying?!! Go!

The Church Steeple Murders / The Case of the Crucified Policeman

A new month of macabre posts now begins, and we pick up where we left off back in June-- with more bloody 'n brutal Bentley of Scotland Yard cases directly from the crumbly 'ol crypt of crime! And this is a great 1942 double feature via Pep Comics #29 and #31 featuring some creepy cop crucifixion, -PLUS- a truly horrific church steeple impaling! Oooo that's gotta hurt! Can you solve both mysteries before Bentley himself reveals the terrifyin' truths? See for yourself! And each story features some of my absolute favorite Paul Reinman art ever, especially both of those jaw-dropping splash pages!

The Head on Traitor's Gate!

The last post of June 2025 delivers a splashy severed head stuck high upon a gory gate! Yes, it's a gorgeously gruesome glimpse into a crime horror theme we'll see much more of in July, meaning a bounty of Bentley of Scotland Yard / "Can You Guess Who The Killer Is?" tales! From the October 1942 issue of Pep Comics #32, and featuring early art work from THOIA fan favorite, Paul Reinman! Hold onto your h-h-h-ats, and everything inside of 'em, --Mr. Karswell promises a weirder, wilder, and a way more violent month of posts as this sinister summer sadistically scorches on...

My Son, the Mortician

We visited a casket company in our previous post HERE, so how about today we stroll down to the 'ol mortuary, and head straight back into the embalming chamber where an even fussier issue has potential to end the family business-- or does it? From the May - June 1977 issue of The Unexpected #179.

Sorry, This Coffin is Occupied

Time to add a chilling premonition to the cremation style summer heatwave we're currently locked in, so let's head down to the Cavendish Coffin Company and see what all the fuss is! From the Dec. 1977 issue of The Unexpected #182.

Forever Dead

It's Zombie Sunday Funday, and time for another variable spin on the 'ol monkey's paw-esque creeping dead classic, via the Sept. - October 1954 issue of Voodoo #17! Yes, sometimes paying a gruesome price to get your loved one back actually (sort of) pays off. I'd say "Be careful what you wish for!" --but in the end, it's not so judassy after all, --eh, Dr. Judas?

Tales of Terror: Gold! Gold! Gold!

Sometimes these older precode horror tales feel extra mean spirited and grimy, as well as unintentionally hilarious. Take for example this "Tales of Terror" entry from the June 1946 issue of Yellowjacket Comics #10. Alan Mandel's artistic action blend of amaturish awkwardness in the character posing adds a sort of surreal edge to everything, whether it's slapping, kicking, bashing, or doing whatever. And that goofy lookin' horror host hag is a truly horrible hoot too!

Duke of Darkness vs. Professor Evil

As some of you already know, I like to throw a superhero horror tale atcha here every once in a while to keep things interesting. And this one is not only very innnnteresting, it's also The Duke of Darknessessess's very first action-packed appearance, --and it's all pretty damn funny too! From the October 1945 issue of K-O Komics #1 (PLEASE NOTE that I usually link to the GCD issue info here, but it doesn't seem to be responding at the moment for whatever reason, and you definitely don't want to miss the great Jack Kirby cover on this one too!) Anyway, if you're one to skip these horror hero posts because you're too cool 'n snobby, then I beg you to reconsider and at least give it a try, it's tons of fun (and funny), especially if you enjoy supernatural stuff like The Spirit, or The Spectre. Did I mention this story is also funny?
